Medication Management

Adults 65 and older use more medicine, daily, than any other age group in the United States, accounting for 34 percent of all prescription medication, according to the National Council on Patient Information and Education. For the elderly, especially those who suffer chronic conditions that require multiple medicines, managing prescriptions alone can be extremely difficult. Family members and caregivers can assist their loved ones by helping them keep track of their medications and making sure they're taken at the right time and in the correct dosage. Between 40 and 75 percent of older people do not take their medications correctly, according to the council.

Full Social Calendar

Mental and social stimulation are key for someone dealing with aging difficulties, Dementia and other diagnosis. Experts have known for a while that remaining engaged in hobbies or social activities can fend off feelings of isolation and depression, both of which can further the aging progress. For caregivers, this means two things. First, it is vital that a loved one's engagement in hobbies, social events, projects, or community activities does not wane once he or she is diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or any type of dementia. Second, if a loved one becomes withdrawn or starts to spend less time interacting in ways than he or she used to, it may be a sign of a larger problem.

03

Medical Transporation

Transportation is crucial to ensure access to essential services such as medical care and grocery shopping. The availability of adequate transportation enables older persons to live independently in their communities and helps to prevent isolation and the possible need for long-term care placement. Many older people, who do not drive, must rely on family and friends to provide much of the transportation. But, for others, it is necessary to find community resources to provide transportation, as this vital support service may be their only connection to the outside world.
